Cenovus Sponsored Literacy Resources

Cenovus Literacy Partnership


In the spring of 2014, Grasslands entered into a partnership with Cenovus Energy Ltd. to provide more resources for students and teachers within the school division. Cenovus generously donated $600,000 over three years for both universal classroom and targeted intervention resources. We thank them for their ongoing support!

In year one (2014) of this partnership, the following resources were purchased for Kindergarten to Grade 3 and distributed to every elementary school in the district. The school division also provided professional development sessions designed to assist teachers and administrators with implementation of these new literacy resources.

Universal Classroom Resource -Scholastic's Literacy Place for the Early Years in KG - Gr. 3

  • Components purchased for each grade level in KG - Gr. 3 include Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Modelled Writing, Shared Writing, Guided Writing, Word Work, Oral Language Kit, Inquiry Kits, online teacher support and Teacher Resource Books.

Targeted Intervention Resource - Pearson's Leveled Literacy Intervention by Fountas and Pinnell

  • Each elementary school received Leveled Literacy Intervention kits to support vulnerable readers including LLI Green (Levels A-J), LLI Blue (Levels C-N) and LLI Red (Levels L-Q)

In year two (2015) the Cenovus resources provided support to the Gr. 4 to Gr. 6 teachers in the area of universal classroom and targeted intervention. This year also began supporting the Colony schools with literacy resources appropriate to their context. The school division also provided professional development sessions designed to assist teachers and administrators with implementation of these new literacy resources.

Universal Classroom Resource -Scholastic's Moving Up with Literacy Place in Gr.4 - Gr.6

  • Components purchase for each grade level in Gr. 4 - Gr. 6 include Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Modelled Writing, Shared Writing, Guided Writing, Word Work, Oral Language development, through Book Clubs,and Strategy Units as well as online teacher support and resource books. In year three (2016) the Cenovus resources provided support to the Gr. 7-12 teachers with both universal classroom and targeted intervention resources as well as resources for Hutterite Colony schools. The school division also provided professional development sessions designed to assist teachers and administrators with implementation of these new literacy resources.

  • Components purchase for each grade level in Gr. 7 - Gr. 9 include Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Modelled Writing, Shared Writing, Guided Writing, Word Work, Oral Language development, through Book Clubs,and Inquiry Units as well as online teacher support and resource books.   • Each school received additional Leveled Literacy Intervention kits to support vulnerable readers in LLI Purple (Levels R - W) and LLI Teal (Levels U - Z). 
Throughout the process, student data has been recorded using the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System to determine instructional levels for each student in Grades 1-6 twice yearly at the district level. Additionally some schools have administered the standard BAS assessment with their students 3 times a year.  The data thus far shows student literacy levels are increasing and interventions are assisting greatly with not only student's ability but their confidence levels.
